Periodontal maintenance
A maintenance visit is a deeper cleaning and a measurement of the gums, for adults who have had treatment for gum disease.

What happens
The visits, in order
Patients usually return every three to four months at first. The interval is set at each visit.
- 01
Step 1: A check
We measure the pockets and look at how the gums have responded since the last visit.
- 02
Step 2: A cleaning
We clean above and below the gumline where it is needed.
- 03
Step 3: A talk
We show you where plaque is gathering and how to clean there.
- 04
Step 4: The next visit
We set the interval with you and write to your dentist.
Good to know
Comfort, other options and what to expect
Comfort
We numb the areas that need it, and you can ask for a break at any time. Many maintenance visits need little or no numbing.
Other options, and waiting
The alternative is alternating visits between your own dentist's office and ours, or having all of them with your dentist. If visits stop, deep pockets can return.
Risks and after-care
Gums can be tender for a day or two and teeth can feel sensitive. We tell you what to expect, and what to do if it lasts.
How this is billed
Some plans pay for it through dental coverage and some through medical coverage, and some do not pay at all. You get a written estimate before any treatment. There is no price on this page.
