Gum grafting
A gum graft adds tissue where gums have pulled back from a tooth, for adults whose dentist has noticed the gum line moving.

What happens
The visits, in order
Most grafts take one surgical visit and one or two check visits over the following weeks.
- 01
Step 1: The exam
We look at where the gum has moved, how much tissue is there and why it may have moved.
- 02
Step 2: The plan
We explain where tissue could come from: your own palate, a donor material or a combination.
- 03
Step 3: The graft
We prepare the area, place the tissue and close it. The visit usually takes a morning or an afternoon.
- 04
Step 4: The checks
We see you in the first weeks to look at healing, and write to your dentist.
Good to know
Comfort, other options and what to expect
Comfort
We numb the area with a local anesthetic. If tissue comes from the palate, we numb that spot too. Tell us if you want to pause.
Other options, and waiting
Not every receding gum needs a graft. Sometimes we measure the area over time, or change how it is brushed. If recession continues, the root can be exposed and tooth sensitivity can follow.
Risks and after-care
The graft may not take fully, and a second visit is sometimes needed. The palate can be sore for a week or two. We give written after-care, including what to eat and how to brush.
How this is billed
Some plans pay for it through dental coverage and some through medical coverage, and some do not pay at all. You get a written estimate before any treatment. There is no price on this page.
Questions
About gum grafting
Where does the tissue come from?
Often from the roof of your own mouth, or from a donor material. We explain the options at the exam, and you choose.
How long is recovery?
It varies. Many patients are back to ordinary routines in a few days, with careful eating and brushing for longer. We give you written instructions.
Will my dentist hear from you?
Yes. We write after the exam and after the graft.
