Dental implants

An implant is a post placed in the jawbone to hold a crown, bridge or denture, for adults who are missing a tooth or teeth.

What happens

The visits, in order

Most implants take an exam, a placement visit and a check, then months of healing before your dentist makes the crown.

  1. 01

Step 1: The exam and scan

We look at your gums and bone, review a scan and talk with your dentist about where the crown will go.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Placement

We place the implant in the jaw and close the gum over it or leave a small cap showing.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Healing

The bone needs time to join the implant. We usually allow several months, and we check on it.

  4. 04

    Step 4: The crown

Your dentist makes and places the crown. We write to confirm the implant is ready for it.

Good to know

Comfort, other options and what to expect

  • Comfort

We numb the area with a local anesthetic. Tell us if you want to pause, and ask about other options for comfort before the visit.

  • Other options, and waiting

The alternatives are a bridge, a partial denture, or leaving the space. A missing tooth can let neighboring teeth shift over time. Some patients need bone added before an implant, and we say so at the exam.

  • Risks and after-care

Risks include infection, an implant that doesn't join the bone, and, in some places, nerve or sinus problems. Smoking and some health conditions raise them. We explain the risks before you decide, and give written after-care.

How this is billed

Some plans pay for it through dental coverage and some through medical coverage, and some do not pay at all. You get a written estimate before any treatment. There is no price on this page.

Questions

About dental implants

Who makes the crown?

Your dentist, or the dentist you name. We place the implant and write to confirm it is ready.

Do I need bone added first?

Some patients do. We look at a scan and tell you at the exam whether it applies to you.

How long does healing take?

It varies from person to person. We usually allow several months before the crown, and we check on it along the way.
